Cocos2D? Any other 2D engines? What do you guys use?

Posted by Kajenx - February 10th, 2015

Hey guys.

So, I'm looking for a good 2D game engine that will minimize the amount of coding I have to do to make top-down and platforming style tile based games.  I've found Cocos2D (which is free, sooo...awesome!) but are there other options that are better, easier, or more robust?  I haven't looked at Cocos too deeply yet.  I'm just throwing out feelers, here.  I'm looking to make a desktop game in the near future and flash just isn't my cup of tea any more...

EDIT: I'm downloading Game Maker right now too. :)

Maybe Flixel or FlasPunk will help you?
Evenmore can use Construct 2, no programing needed but your games will be... simple.

I want MOAR POWER than flash can give me these days, so I think those options are out. I was working on porting my tile engine over to the native 3D stuff and I realized I was wasting my time. It ran faster, but it was still flash. (screen tearing, lag, whiny code problems, GAH)

I've been messing around with Unity for almost a year and I think it's great. It's got C# (which is pretty easy to code in), easy controller support, and you can export for PC, Mac, web, or mobile (and I think consoles too with a special license). Also, there are a ton of tutorials for it. GameMaker looks cool too, but I haven't tried it.

OpenFL is great and powerful. Flash is #1 in my book.

Have you ever tried doing full screen in flash? It's horrible! OAO

Fullscreen is hard to pull off. There is fullscreensourcerect which scales the game up from lower res, that helps. SuperChibiKnight does fullscreen very well for a flash game.

I'd like to do HD, ideally.
