Can anyone recomend a good 3D game engine?

Posted by Kajenx - February 18th, 2012

I've been looking at the Unity game engine over the last few days, and I'm amazed at how easy it is to make a 3D game these days! I'm thinking I MUST try it out on something. The only downside is that it's REALLY expensive for the pro version which has all the sexy features to make your games look awesome.

Soooo, I'm wondering if anyone has tried any other editors and could recommend one that's less expensive. OR maybe you have lots of horrible things to say about Unity, which is also welcome (I don't want to spend half a year developing a game that won't work, lol).

I think I'll try out Torque3D and NeoAxis to see how they compare. They're much less expensive and sound like they have similar features, but we'll see, I suppose... I'd like something that can export to a variety of platforms, but I'd probably be trying my hand at a downloadable game, so win/mac support is mainly what I'd like to see.

Oh! Totally go for Unity, man!

But... $1500...

NO, GAME ENGINE FOR MAKE GAME!

Oh RicePirate how you make my pants giggle.

Maybe if I shout at him I can break the language barrier. :3

quake engine was truly beast at its time in the 90's if your looking to make something simple.
but i heard either tom or mindchamber say unity may be workable engine for future 3D dames on newgrounds submissions.

good luck, and if you need a modelers help, don't hesitate to ask!.

Two off the top of my head are:
UDK : http://www.udk.com/

Cry engine: http://www.crytek.com/cryengine

I looked into UDK. You kinda have to guess how successful you'll be with that one. Who wants to pay 25% royalties on everything they make, you know?

Unity *cough* .

Lol, was that a good cough or a bad one?

there is the doom 3 source code. i'm pretty sure it completely free.

Source SDK...free and open source!

Looks like that's modding software...

Haha I was going to say Unity

A few representatives spoke at my school yesterday and walked us through how to make a first person shooter from scratch. Also showed that it could easily export to all sorts of platforms like iPhone and Xbox

You should come on MSN once in a goddamned while. :3 Actually, come on now, I have a question!

My suggestion is that you just learn OpenGL ES 2.0 . It's worth it. (Why pay money when you can use the free tools to do whatever you want with it?)

I don't really have the know-how or interest to write a whole 3D game engine, lol. There are a few free options out there, anyway, so might as well try them out, no?

Uhhm....PirateBay........or look on you tube how to get it for free ;D

Phoenix.
Definitely the Phoenix engine.

use the trial version of unity, if you learn it and get good you might be more tempted to pay full price for pro

I use Panda3D and love it. It's developed by carnegie mellon, so the learning curve won't kill you and the power is immense. It even has little nice extras like a profiler (good for when your game is bottlenecking/crawling for some reason and you don't know why).

Plus, its entirely free and open source. And of course it is based off of openGL, like all of the most powerful engines are.

Wow, I'll have to look into that!
