How to sell musics online?!

Posted by Kajenx - August 17th, 2013

So, like, I'm used to all these print on demand stores that make it super easy to sell things online, and I thought, "Oh, hey, I should just sell the music I make for my games! It'll be easy right?!"

WRONG!!

I don't know WTF the deal is with music, but it's a nightmare... Amazon MP3 has set prices and takes 15 days to even list the song (what...?) and you get your money after 60-90 days (what?!) and they only do monthly reports (SRSLY WHAT?!), Bandcamp seems nice, but it makes you deal with people directly, so I have to deal with sales tax (yeah, that's a thing now...internet sales tax) and endless $1 purchases in my paypal account (blegh), WHY I NO CAN HAZ SIMPLE?!

So, I'm just wondering what you guys have used or tried. I just feel kind of baffled.

EDIT: What about CDBaby? Anyone used that?

This was the simplist way I could find to sell music to as many major online retailers for the cheapest amount:

Alternatively bandcamp is free, and you get the money immediately.

Easiest bets would be to use Bandcamp or Itunes. I have distributed items on Itunes before, they are pretty easy to get in touch with, and retail products through. Bandcamp is good too, less security though. Easy easy.

Can you go through Google Play, or do they only deal with labels?

You could port your games to mobile and add the music downloads as an in-game purchase.

Not related to this post whatsoever, but I just wanted to take the opportunity to tell you how much I admire your work, your games are something I (a non gamer) enjoy playing.

I suck at videogames, but I find your approach to game design fascinating, it's almost as though you design games specifically to appeal to people who want to play games casually.

And the fact that you do the animation, programming, and sound design is astonishing.
Your soundtrack for "William and Sly 2" reminds me of the music Cliff Martinez did for the film "Solaris".

Based on the prior messages you've left on my posts I think our opinions vary on a variety of subjects, still if I ever meet you in person I'll be sure to buy you a drink.

Thanks,

P.S. Congratulations on the Tank Award!

Haha, okay, you had me all curious about the "I think our opinions vary on a variety of subjects" line and I had to go hunting for what I said. I honestly have very few opinions about anything, so it was kind of surprising, lol. XD

Thanks for the ego massage though, lol. It's always nice to hear when someone likes what you're doing. I'm sure you can relate. :3

are you a taoist

If I said yes, I wouldn't be a very good taoist, but if I said no, that would imply I'm not a taoist. Instead I'll say that there is no taoist here, there is only me.

XD

You have humble store, but if yo are going to use, It places a widget on your site where people can buy.
